Uomachi Gintengai and AMU Kokura

Kokura, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture

The shopping arcade in front of Kokura Station in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and Amu Plaza Kokura, a commercial facility directly connected to Kokura Station, are part of the “Tax Free Town” that unifies the community.

Uomachi Gintengai is Japan's first arcade shopping street.

In 1952, Uomachi Gintengai became the first arcade shopping district in Japan. This marked the start of a new idea.

From Uomachi 1-chome to 3-chome, you can find many fine-food stores, general stores, and more along a 400-meter street that extends all the way to Tanga Market. Among them, there are well-established tea shops that sell popular green-tea sweets for women, local specialty fried udon, and other Kitakyushu specialties. Take your time to explore the market and enjoy its lively atmosphere.

The "ecoroof" that connects Uomachi 1-chome to Uomachi 2 and 3-chome creates a unique arcade representing Kitakyushu as the Environmental City of the Future. It is equipped with solar panels and LED lighting, giving it a futuristic appearance resembling a UFO.

Amu Plaza Kokura West Bldg. 1F, directly connected to JR Kokura Station
