What Documentation Do I Need to Show Customs?
When claiming your VAT refund, providing the correct documentation at the customs office is essential to ensure a smooth process. Here’s what you’ll need to have ready when you visit customs before leaving the country:
1. Your Receipt or VAT Form
You’ll need the receipt or VAT refund form provided by the store where you made your purchase. Some stores will attach a VAT form or sticker directly to your receipt, which customs will stamp to confirm that your goods are leaving the country.
2. The Goods You Purchased
Customs officers may ask to inspect the items you’re claiming a VAT refund for, so make sure to keep the goods with you in your carry-on luggage. If they ask to see the items, ensure they are in new condition, with tags still attached if possible.
3. Your Passport
Customs will often require proof of your residency status to confirm that you are eligible for a VAT refund. Be prepared to show your passport or other identification that proves you are a non-EU resident (or non-resident for the relevant country).
4. Boarding Pass or Travel Ticket
To confirm you are leaving the country (or the EU), customs may also ask to see your boarding pass, flight details, or travel ticket. This proves that your purchased goods are being exported.
Important Note for Norway
If you’re claiming a VAT refund for purchases made in Norway, the process is different. You don’t need to visit customs for a stamp. Instead, take a live photo of the goods once you’re back home, ensuring the geolocation data is enabled to verify that the items were exported from Norway.
